What barcode scanning gives you
Every packaged product carries a barcode that maps to a product record — brand, ingredient list, and where available, nutrition data. Scanning it is faster than reading a label by hand and works even when the printed ingredient panel is small, worn, or in a language you don’t read well. FoodBuddy looks the barcode up against its product database and, where the product is already known, shows the full ingredient breakdown against your profile immediately.
What sources this data
Product records draw primarily on Open Food Facts, a large open database of packaged foods, supplemented by other verified sources. Coverage is strongest for widely distributed products and weaker for small regional or private-label items — if a barcode comes back with no match, that’s a gap in the database, not a statement about the product.

If the product is in the database, its full ingredient list and profile matches appear immediately.
No match? Fall back to the label scanner to read the printed list directly.
A missing product isn’t a green light
An unmatched barcode means FoodBuddy has no record to check — not that the product is free of anything you’re avoiding. Always default to the physical label when the database comes up empty; see our product limits for the full picture of what the app can and cannot confirm.
