About FoodBuddy
FoodBuddy is an ingredient-exploration app built by INSIGHT42. We built it because reading an ingredient label under fluorescent supermarket lighting, with a kid pulling at your sleeve, is a genuinely bad way to try to understand what’s in your food.
Why we built it
Ingredient lists are written for regulators, not shoppers. The same substance hides under a dozen different names depending on the product, the country, and the manufacturer’s preferred phrasing. If you’re checking for something you care about — an intolerance, an allergen, or just an ingredient you’d rather avoid — you either memorize a long list of aliases or you stand in the aisle searching your phone. FoodBuddy exists to close that gap: scan or search a product, and it compares what’s actually printed on the label against the interest areas you’ve chosen, showing you what matched and why.
What FoodBuddy is — and isn’t
FoodBuddy is an educational tool. It reads ingredient lists, surfaces the terms that matter to your profile, and explains how confident it is in each match — direct match, keyword-identified, or unverified. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose anything, and it does not decide whether a food is safe for you. That decision belongs to you, the physical label in your hand, and — for anything health-related — a qualified professional. We say this plainly because we’d rather you trust what FoodBuddy actually does than what an app icon implies it might.
How we work
On-device by default
Scanning and matching run on your device against a local database, so the app keeps working without a signal.
Show the reasoning
Every match links back to the label term that triggered it, so you can verify it yourself rather than take our word for it.
Honest about limits
A missing match is not a guarantee of anything. We’d rather under-claim than have you rely on a false negative.

Who’s behind it
FoodBuddy is made by INSIGHT42. We’re a small team that builds focused, single-purpose tools rather than trying to be everything to everyone. FoodBuddy is our attempt at making one specific, recurring moment — standing at the shelf, unsure — a little easier.
