What an ingredient checker actually does
An ingredient checker takes the full list printed on a product — often fifteen or twenty items long, written in food-industry shorthand — and compares it term by term against the things you care about. FoodBuddy’s checker works from either a live scan of the physical label or a product already in the database, so you can check something before you’re standing in the aisle with it.
Why a plain read-through isn’t enough
The same ingredient can appear under several names: milk protein as casein or whey, wheat-derived starch under an E-number, soy hidden inside “lecithin.” Reading the list once and scanning for a word you recognize misses these. FoodBuddy’s checker matches against a dictionary of alternative names, not just the headline term, and shows you which name triggered each match.

Match confidence, shown honestly
Not every match is equally certain. FoodBuddy labels each one: a direct match is a known name for something in your selected areas; a keyword match resembles one closely enough to flag but not confirm; an unverified result means the checker couldn’t identify the term confidently.
